North Queensland Campervan Touring

Do you want a campervan hire holiday that takes you through steamy tropical rainforests, into dense tablelands and along pristine blue coastlines? Cairns is the main regional city of Far North Queensland(FNQ), and depending on where you want to start your campervan trip, Cairns is a 21hr drive from Brisbane along the National Highway A1, or a two-and-a-half hour flight. Most people assume the FNQ is all just rainforest and beaches, but there is far more to the region than that. FNQ is a great destination for a driving holiday.

The vibrant city of Cairns is the perfect base to explore this diverse region. Famous for its tropical rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns is the commercial hub of North Queensland and is the ideal destination for the campervan hire traveller searching for the maritime adventure of a lifetime. You can take a day trip out to one of many sections of the reef or try an island visit such as to Fitzroy Island to snorkel or dive. Alternatively, there is plenty of fishing opportunities in the region. When stingers are in season, you can swim at the Crystal Cascades. To get there, you drive to the suburb of Redlynch and simply follow the signs to Crystal Cascades. Cairns has the full range of accommodation opportunities, including the Cairns Holiday Park which is able to provide shady caravan and camping sites, and great facilities including an amenities block, kiosk, swimming pool, free internet and an air-conditioned TV room.

Kuranda, situated on the Atherton Tablelands above Cairns, is another great place for travellers, boasting the famous Kuranda Heritage Markets, eclectic galleries, views of the Barron Falls and delightful cafes and restaurants. You really need an entire day to explore it. If you don't want to drive there, you can take a trip on the narrow-gauge Kuranda Scenic Railway or the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, an aerial tram. Kuranda has a number of heritage-listed sites, including Kuranda Railway Station. Attractions in Kuranda include Birdworld Kuranda, the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Rainforestation Nature Park, the Australian Venom Zoo, the Kuranda Koala Gardens and the Emu Ridge Gallery / Fossil and Gemstone Museum. If you want to spend more than a day in the town, the Kuranda Rainforest Accommodation Park provides shady campsites set amongst the rainforest, with a restaurant on site.

Port Douglas

Port Douglas is sixty kilometres north from Cairns along the Captain Cook Highway and you will enjoy every minute of this stunning coastal drive. With a campervan, it's easy to travel further north from Port Douglas to explore the world famous Daintree Rainforest. The Daintree Rainforest is the world's oldest living rainforest, and can be explored via a variety of methods. You can book tours to explore it by night (when most of the nocturnal animals are active); you can swing through the canopy on a zip-line; or climb to the top of the canopy to explore the uppermost reaches of the branches. Leave the campervan behind for a day and venture along the dirt tracks of the Daintree Rainforest in a guided 4WD tour. You might prefer to go and discover secret swimming holes and pristine beaches or head out to the brilliant colours of the reef.

Atherton Tablelands

Head inland from Cairns and you will uncover one of North Queensland's most untouched treasures: the Atherton Tablelands. There are unknown wonders hidden away, like the most gigantic tree you are ever likely to see, the Curtain Fig Tree near Yungaburra. Yungaburra is a heritage village, and you should walk the Historic Yungaburra Old Town Loop. You should visit Lake Eacham, Lake Barrine and Lake Tinaroo, as they are all distinct in character and blessed with outstanding scenery. At Mt Hypipamee National Park, a gentle walk through beautiful rainforest brings you to the site of a geological oddity - a volcanic pipe crater. Drive towards Millaa Millaa to enjoy the Atherton Tablelands Waterfall Circuit. First stop is Malanda which has a waterfall you can drive over, and then travel south to view the famous Millaa Millaa Falls. Other beautiful stops are the Elinjaa, Zillie and Mungalli Falls. For the foodies, you can always try the Mountain Tablelands Food Trail, which includes dairies, teahouses and tea plantations, strawberry farms, coffee houses and so much more.
