Explore Queensland's Sunshine Coast in a Campervan
Experience Queensland's beautiful Sunshine Coast the easy way with the freedom of a campervan. The Sunshine Coast offers such a diversity of attractions, lush tropical rainforest, captivating villages and sun-washed beaches that you need to set aside at least a week to explore this little slice of paradise. You can even drive straight up to Gympie, Maryborough, Rainbow Beach, Hervey Bay or Fraser Island.
Heading north from Brisbane, the first hint that you are heading into the Sunshine Coast will be glimpses of the Glasshouse Mountains to your left, peeking through the regimented plantations of pine trees. You can then take the detour from the main highway to the award-winning Australia Zoo at Beerwah. Once home to the late, great environmentalist Steve Irwin, also known internationally as the Crocodile Hunter, this zoo captivates visitors all year round. Visitors will see a wide variety of birds, mammals and reptiles. They can view crocodile feedings, hand-feed elephants, and have many other hands-on animal encounters. Wildlife Warriors and the Australian Zoo Wildlife Hospital run a rescue operation and care station for any native wildlife which may be injured in accidents outside the zoo.
Another great attraction along the main highway is the Ettamogah Pub at Palmview, which is right next to the Aussie World amusement park. The Ettamogah Pub is based on a cartoon pub illustrated by Ken Maynard which was featured in the now-defunct Australasian Post magazine. The pub is accompanied by a cluster of gift shops aimed at the tourist trade, and there is some great locally-made furniture and crafts items for sale.
When it comes to the beaches, the possibilities are pretty much endless. From Caloundra (with its great weekend markets) to Noosa, the Sunshine Coast beaches stretch for lazy kilometres. Noosa is the tourist mecca of the Sunshine Coast. With brilliant white beaches and tourist shops lining the famous Hastings Street, plus perfect weather for most of the year, you will be relaxed in no time.
Maroochydore is one of the centers of commerce on the Sunshine Coast, and is right next door to Mooloolaba and the marine wonders of Underwater World SEA LIFE Aquarium. This attraction is not to be missed, highly recommended are the seal performances, the turtles and the ocean walkthrough under the aquarium. You can even arrange to dive with the sharks.
The hinterland is just as idyllic, with country towns like Eumundi, Buderim, Nambour, Mapleton, Maleny and Montville a delight for lovers of pristine countryside and charming mountain villages. Nambour is one of the largest towns in the hinterland, and home to the most iconic symbol of the Sunshine Coast: the heritage-listed Big Pineapple on Nambour Connection Road. The Big Pineapple is no longer open as a tourist attraction, however it now hosts a Saturday Farmers Market. Montville and Maleny are a shopper's paradise, with unique crafts and quaint shops lining the main streets of both towns. Eumundi is famous for its weekly markets, held Wednesdays and weekends, where you can buy fresh flowers, fabulous street food, and just about anything else you can think of.
