Standard Liability for Damage

All AutoRent Campers vehicles come with comprehensive insurance cover. A standard liability of AU$5,000 applies in the event of any damage to either our vehicle or Third Party Property. Liability applies to all rentals as specified in the Rental Agreement. This means that regardless of fault, all damage up to the limit of the liability amount is the renters responsibility. This includes any tyre, windscreen or headlight damage and any other internal or external damage not attributable to fair wear and tear, such as returning the vehicle in an abnormally dirty condition (including hair, odour and other evidence of animals).

In addition to the standard liability there is an additional AU$4,900 liability fee ($9,900 total) if an accident occurs on an unsealed road or overhead damage occurs by failing to clear low objects. This is not able to be reduced.

There is a higher liability on unsealed roads and for overhead damage

  • Unsealed Roads - Regardless of fault, if there's an accident, damage or loss on an unsealed road, the renters liability will be up to a maximum of AU$9,900. If they reduce their sealed road liability to $0, then a maximum liability of $9900 will remain for loss/damage/accidents on unsealed roads.
  • Overhead Damage - Regardless of fault, the renter remains liable up to a maximum of AU$9,900 where there overhead damage is incurred on a sealed or an unsealed road. Their liability for overhead damage or damage on unsealed roads remains, even if their sealed road liability has been reduced to $0.

Underbody damage and damage caused by water immersion are NOT covered by insurance and remain the renters responsibility.

FOR THOSE WHO STILL HAVE QUESTIONS

Who is allowed to drive the vehicle?

  • Only those who have shown us their driving licenses and have been accepted by us and authorised as a renter or joint renter.
    • Note: Don’t let anyone else drive, otherwise, they’ll be responsible for all damage to other people’s property and you’ll be responsible for all the damage to our vehicle.

Can’t I travel on unsealed roads?

  • We aren’t saying that you can’t travel on unsealed roads, just that they’re much riskier than sealed roads. Unsealed roads are mostly narrow and winding with poor sightlines and with a high centre crown and loose gravel at the edges. So, if you’re on an unsealed road, slow right down and be extremely cautious. Decide for yourself whether you really want to travel on an unsealed road. Don’t leave the decision to your GPS

Why do I have to pay for damage if it isn’t my fault?

  • It’s the same as it is with most private vehicles. You pay for the first so many dollars of any loss or damage unless and until this can be recovered from the other driver. (If our costs can be recovered from the other driver, then we’ll reimburse you for the amount we’ve taken from you). This process can take as long as 6 months or even more and doesn’t always result in success

What about windscreen and tyre damage?

  • Windscreen and tyre damage are treated in the same way as any other vehicle damage.  You’re responsible up to the limit of the liability amounts stated in your rental contract.
    • We’ll repair windscreens if appropriate and replace them only where necessary
