Darwin Touring Ideas: Kakadu National Park
At the northern end of Australia lies Darwin, a far flung outpost of culture, heritage and beauty set in the vast outback of the Northern Territory. Its close proximity to our northerly Asian neighbours means this is a city of great diversity in terms of people, cuisine and culture, making it an exciting and invigorating place to spend a few days. But just as exciting about this city are its surrounds- sweeping, rugged and beautiful they are just begging you to hire a campervan and do some serious exploring!
Taking a drive to Kakadu National Park will probably be one of the best decisions you make in your life. This World Heritage listed Australian icon is an easy three hour drive from Darwin, but it will take you a lot longer to get around its 20 000 square kilometres! Numerous campgrounds provide plenty of accomodation options, and it is just up to you to decide which parts of the park you wish to see. This is not going to be an easy task, as the options seem completely limitless, and this park is so diverse as to include a whole tropical river and its catchment area, thick forests, mangrove floodlands, mudflats, savannah woodlands and a sandstone plateau. Wherever you go you will be surrounded by the amazing array of birds and animals that call this park home. Possibly the most famous resident is the salt water crocodile, so enjoy looking out for his gnarly shape whenever you are close to water, but always look for signs indicating swimming is safe if you want to take a dip.

The richness of Kakadu extends to its Aboriginal heritage, which dates back to over 50 000 years ago. Over 50 per cent of the land here is held by Aboriginal trusts, and the traditional owners have a joint say in the running of the park. Ancient rock carvings, cave paintings and archaelogical sites are scattered throughout the region, so be sure to visit some of these for a true feel of Australian indigenous culture.

You will not want to miss spending a few days in Darwin either side of your trip to Kakadu. This article of ours provides plenty information on what to do and see here. This region is renowned for its fishing, so once you have chosen one of our campervans for hire why not find out some nearby fishing spots and try your hand at catching a tasty barramundi? A very festive city, the evenings are as exciting as the days here. The Wharf Marina comes alive under the infamous Northern Territory sunset, and the many seafood restaurants and bars fill up with families and friends out for a good time. Its the perfect way to top off a hot and happy days holiday beofre retiring to your campervan.
