Known for its red walled gorges and deep swimming holes, a round trip taking in all of
the main attractions in the ranges is only 300 kilometres long, but there is so much to
see and do you could take as long as you like on the trip and still be kept busy. Read
this article for an in
depth review of the tour of the Ranges. The first attraction you reach
is Simpsons Gap, a natural waterhole surrounded by cliffs and
ghost gums that is just a taste of things to come. Enjoy watching the black footed rock
wallabies bound amongst the rocks, and make use of the picnic facilities on offer.
Head on to Standley Chasm, a narrow rock cleft that rises to over eighty metres. Try
and time your visit for midday, when the overhead sun reflects off the high walls in an
array of orange and red colours. Just down the road from Standley is the Ellery Creek
Big Hole, which has a reputation for being the coldest pool in the region! Its as beautiful
as it is cold however, and because it is a permanent pool it supports a large amount of
flora and fauna, so you are bound to see lots of wildlife here and some impressive
vegetation.
More gorges await you exploration, including the Ormiston Gorge and Pound, and your
penultimate destination of Glen Helen Gorge. Here there are camping and motel like
facilities, so park your campervan for a few days and base yourself to explore the
surrounds. The gorge and the surrounds are as beautiful as anywhere else in the
Ranges, and your time here will be made special by your friendly hosts.
