Campervan In Port Augusta

Reflections of the Flinders Ranges
Reflections of the Flinders Ranges
South Australia's Port Augusta is a seaport town located on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula. Its position at the head of the Spencer Gulf makes its location ideal and puts visitors at the centre of everything. This, as well as the fact that that it is only 322 kilometres north of the state's capital, Adelaide, makes it an ideal destination for your next campervan hire holiday in South Australia.

Port Augusta is a natural harbour that has thrived through Australia's toughest and most trying times. It has one of the country's most ideal positions as it enjoys not only a close proximity to the Eyre Peninsula, but also the Flinder's Ranges. This is essentially what has given it its nicknames of the "Crossroads of Australia, and the "Gateway to the Flinder's Ranges, the Outback and the Spencer Gulf".

Although it may appear a small town at first glance, there is actually more to Port Augusta than meets the eye. It offers all the conveniences and facilities that you would expect from a modern city, but with a hint of nature right on your doorstep. The modern shopping facilities and the vast number of historical places of interest will keep you entertained for hours and you may even learn something along the way.

Port Augusta is the ideal base to explore many of South Australia's most famous attractions. But before you start this adventure it's probably a good idea to find a place to base yourself. Port Augusta offers two fantastic caravan parks, which are both located on the western side of the Spencer Gulf. The Big 4 Holiday Park is located on the corner of the Eyre Highway and Stokes Terrace, giving it an easy to find and quiet location. This park offers several swimming pools, which are fantastic during the warmer months, as well as some excellent campervan facilities.

The second caravan park in town is Port Augusta's Shoreline Caravan Park. This park is situated on Gardiner Avenue, right next to the Spencer Gulf. The park boasts a wide range of sites and they even allow you to bring your pet along.

Before you head out and explore the surrounding natural attractions, take some time to discover the highlights of the Port Augusta township. The best place to start is at the Wadlata Outback Tourist Information Centre. Among the mounds of useful tourist information you will find here, you will also come across some interesting displays that relate to the Aboriginal dreamtime, early exploration and the Flinders Ranges. Each display tells a story of the local way of life and offers an interesting insight into Port Augusta's history.

Once you are finished at the information centre, head to the western side of the Spencer Gulf, where you will eventually come across the Water Tower Lookout. Climb to the top and you will discover unbeatable views of the township and its stunning surrounding areas.

Another great place to spend the afternoon is at the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens. These gardens display an unusual mix of natural bush and selected plantings of unique desert flora. Although these gardens are relatively new they are already home to Australia's largest collection of Eremophila species. They are sure to be a hit with any lover of horticulture.

Port Augusta is the perfect crossroads to wherever you want to head to on your campervan travels. Whether attempting the Nullarbor, heading to Alice Springs or Broken Hill, or if you are just on your way back to returning your camper in Adelaide, this is the place to start your journey!
