A Real Campervan Experience

My family and I decided to take a holiday to Hervey Bay to see the whales, and being a part owner in an online campervan rental company - I thought why not take a campervan?

The gang at Kea helped me out with a "big boy" 6 Berth Deluxe and we had the luxury of living in the same city as we were picking up from. This may sound strange but it makes a difference if you can drive it home and pack your gear straight into it. It's the little things like salt, pepper, sauce, vegemite, oil, paper towel, a grater, a bath mat and the kids' scooters (stuff you wouldn't dream of packing in a suitcase) that can make a big difference.

The 6 Berth is a monster but surprisingly EASY to drive and the turbo diesel has some get up and go! You soon get used to the indicators on the wrong side and remember you can't corner like Andretti on a race track. You also learn really quickly to make sure all the cupboards are locked as the Jatz crackers fly into your daughter's head. Lucky it was that cupboard and not the one with the canned food.

Fuel wise, expect to pay a bit depending on distance, but we used three quarters of a tank from Brisbane to Hervey Bay and it cost around $110 to fill up. Mind you, I am a lead foot and whilst I did not speed I certainly did my share of overtaking slow vehicles - so it probably depends a lot on your driving style.

I would be the first to admit that we had a great holiday. We are usually the 2 bedroom apartment type, but the kids love the bed over the drivers cabin as well as the campgrounds as they had new and exciting stuff to check out. The scooters we purchased were fantastic for our long walks and they folded up pretty well for storage.

The whales we saw were amazing and we are still in awe of their size and grace. It truly is an experience everyone should do at least once in their lifetime, especially if you live in or would like to vist South East Queensland. I can't believe I am 37 and have never before ventured the four hours north. I am unable to describe the emotion I felt when the whales were up close. It is prehistoric and your mind (well mine anyway) has trouble accepting the beauty.

I would definitely recommend Kea and Big4 Holiday Parks (expect to pay $55 per night for two adults and two children) for any family looking for a new adventure.
