This document contains a brief summary of Backpacker rental conditions. The full details of our rental contract do apply. Rates quoted are in Australian dollars.
A surcharge of 3% of the total cost will be levied to cover state government taxes, duties, vehicle registration recovery and administration costs where applicable. Backpacker reserves the right to amend the administration fee upon Government intervention.
NOTE the administration fee is included in the Stress Free Package.
If a credit card is presented as payment, the credit card holder will be jointly and severally liable as a customer. Accepted credit cards are Visa Card & Mastercard (American Express is no longer accepted from 01 August 2010). A non-refundable 2% administration fee will apply to all Visa and Mastercard transactions. Credit card administration fees also apply to debited security bonds and only the hirers credit card is acceptable to use for the purpose of the security bond.
Australian legislation provides limited coverage for personal injury. We strongly recommend that all people travelling in Australia take out Personal Travel Insurance.
All Vehicles are insured for the damage to the vehicle or to the property of a Third Party. The hirer is responsible for the first
AU$3,500 for the Breezer, Nomad Warrior and Wanderer campervans or
AU$5,000 for the Off-Roader 4WD of the cost of damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break in or vandalism with the exception of the
exclusions. This also includes the cost of the daily rental rate for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs (demurrage).
The liability is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid at the time the accident report is completed, not at the completion of the rental. The liaiblity fee will be refunded if Backpacker is successful in recovering the cost of the damages from the Third Party. (this can take months)
The liability applies in respect of each claim, not rental.
This Standard Excess can be reduced, in most circumstances, by the purchase of the Excess Reduction Option 1 or Excess Reduction Option 2. Note Excess Reduction 2 is included in the Stress free Package:
Liability Reduction Option 1
The hirer is responsible for the first AU$1,450 for Breezer, Nomad, Wanderer and Warrior and the first AU$2,500 for the Off-Roader 4WD of any accident cost of damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs,theft, fire, break in or vandalism with the exception of the exclusions. Includes demurage.

Liability Reduction Option 2
When liability reduction 2 has been purchased, the hirer will have no liability at all with the exception of the

Tyre and Windscreen Damage:
Cost per day for Breezer, Nomad, Warrior and Wanderer vehicles is AU$5 (max charge AU$250) and AU$8 (max charge AU$400) for the Off-Roader 4WD.
Where the hirer purchased tyre and windscreen cover unlimited windscreen and tyres will be covered for accidental damage.
Tyre and Windscreen cover can only be purchased in conjunction with Liability Reduction 2 or is included in the Smart Pack.
Exclusions:
All insurance cover will be made void if any of the following Exclusions are breached:
- Overhead and underbody damage to the vehicle.
- Tyre and windscreen damage unless tyre and windscreen cover has been purchased.
- Any water related damage, which includes but is not limited to:
-any vehicle submersion
-creek or river crossing
-driving through flooded areas
-beach driving
- Personal belongings: Backpacker recommends the hirer does not leave valuables in the vehicle and that they have insurance to cover for the loss/damage of personal belongings.
- Any damage caused by willful misconduct (e.g. sitting or standing on the bonnet or roof of the vehicle).
- Any damage caused while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Damage caused to the vehicle by snow chains.
- A single vehicle roll over occurs.
- The incorrect use of fuel or the use of Bio Diesel which should not be used (fuel being diesel or petrol), or water or other contamination of fuel.
- The cost to retrieve or recover a vehicle which may include, but is not limited to a vehicle that has become bogged, submerged, caught, trapped, stuck or restricted in any way and/or has been abandoned.
- The cost to replace keys which have become lost, or retrieval of keys which have been locked in a vehicle.
- The vehicle rented may only be used to carry the maximum number of passengers as dictated by the vehicle type. If more passengers are carried than what is allowed Backpacker does not accept any liability.
- Drivers not identified on the rental agreement and/or that have a licence that has been cancelled or suspended and/or drivers who have a licence that is classified as a learners or probationary.
- Damage caused to the vehicle because total load (kg) has exceeded recommended load as stated in vehicle manual. Vehicles are not to be used for the purpose of transporting and haulage of goods other than what might be reasonably expected of a leisure rental.
Vehicle Security Deposit or Bond
On pick up of the vehicle, a Vehicle Security Deposit is payable, the exact amount required for your particular situation is shown on your Voucher. For security purposes,only a credit card can be used for payment of bond. The credit card holder must be present and able to sign for the vehicles security deposit upon vehicle collection. The credit card holder is jointly and severally liable for any damage to the rental vehicle.
PLEASE NOTE: Electronic Credit cards are not accepted for Bond Payments. An electronic credit card is one where the numbers are not raised.
Debited bonds are subject to a 2% credit card administration fee in addtional to the bond amount when the credit card used is either a Visa or Mastercard.
If an liability reduction option is not selected, the security deposit is AU$3500 for Breezer, Nomad, Warrior and Wanderer and AU$5000 for Off-Roader 4WD
Your Credit card is debited for the applicable security bond on pickup, so you MUST have available credit.
If option 1 is selected the Security Bond is reduced to AU$1500 and AU$2500 respectively. This is debited to the hirers credit card when the vehicle is collected. For this reason it is important that the hirer have the funds available and the amount does not exceed the daily allowance available on the credit card.
If option 2 is selected with or without Tyre and Windscreen Cover or the package booked is the Stress Free Package, the Security bond is AU$220 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior and Wanderer or $500 for the Off-Roader 4WD.
The AU$220/AU$500 is taken as an imprint to the hirers credit card when the vehicle is collected. An imprint simply records a figure against the hirers credit card which can be debited if required.
Debited bonds are subject to the credit card administration fee and is refunded when the bond is refunded. If bond is retained the administration fee is retained.
The Security Deposit is fully refundable provided the vehicle is returned on time,to the correct location, undamaged, with a clean interior and with full fuel tank (Fuel being petrol, diesel) and LPG gas.
An AU$220 cleaning fee can be charged if the vehicle is not returned in clean condition. The toilet and waste water tank must be emptied prior to the return of the vehicle, or an additional AU$125 soiling fee will be retained.
Rental Duration:
The Minimum Rental period is 5 days for all vehicles, except the Breezer which is 3 days, with the exception of one way hires. Please refer to one-way section for more information
Minimum rental period is subject to change during peak periods.
Minimum rental period is 7 days between December 15 and January 5.
Rental days are calculated on a calendar day basis NOT 24 hours. The Daily rate for the entire duration is determined by the date of pickup, location and date you are booking.
Late Pick-up or early return of vehicle does not entitle the hirer to any refund of the unused portion of the rental. Late returns will be charged on a per day basis.
Failure to obtain authorisation for a rental extension will result in a daily rental fee of AU$150 in addition to the daily rate.
One-Way Rentals
One-way rentals are available between most branch locations. With the exception of return one-way hires to Sydney Downtown, which are not available. One way rental fees and minimum rental periods apply.
The Sydney Downtown location allows Breezer pick-ups only with a minimum rental period of seven days when returned to Sydney Mascot (no one way fee applicable). Only Breezer vehicle collection is allowed from the Sydney Downtown office. No vehicle returns available to the downtown office. The Breezer is not available to or from Alice Springs.
The Breezer has a 3 day minimum rental period when pick up and return city are the same. All other vehicles have a 5 day rental minimum when pick up and return locations are the same.
- AU$250 one-way fee applies to one-way rentals with a minimum hire requirement of 7 days with the exception of one-way rentals between Alice Springs and Darwin (and vice-versa)which has a AU$350 one-way fee.
- AU$350 one-way fee applies to one-way rentals with a minimum hire of 14 days.
- Backpacker reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions and/or the distance to nominated destinations in relation to the length of the hire period.

Note the PGO Option, extra driver fees, linen/bedding and camping chairs are included in the Stress Free Package.
Change of Location
If the customer wishes to change the drop-off destination after the rental has commenced, they must first obtain authorisation from Reservations. Subject to the change being approved, an additional charge of up to AU$700 may apply.
Rental Extension
If the customer wishes to extend the rental whilst on hire, they must first obtain authorisation from Reservations. This is subject to availability. The extra cost of an extended rental must be paid by credit card over the telephone on confirmation of the rental extension. Failure to obtain authorisation will result in a daily fee of AU$150 in addition to the daily rate.
Transfers
Backpacker clients will need to find their own way from the airport to the applicable branch, at their own expense.
Infringements and Administration Fees
We reserve the right to charge the hirer for any speeding, parking or tollway fines, associated administration costs and/or accidents including third party property damage not reported on return of the vehicle. In addition to these costs we reserve the right to charge for associated administration costs for processing the fines and/or all insurance claims in the event of customer not having NIL liability. The administration fee per fine will be AU$60.
Exchange Rate / Currency Variations
All credit card transactions are conducted in Australian dollars for deposit portion. Due to exchange rate fluctuations there could be some variance in the amount refunded compared to the amount initially charged, if you amend or cancel and also to the bond transactions. Discovery and Backpacker do not accept any liability for variances up or down.
Licence
A current full (no probationary allowed) drivers licence from your resident country, is to be presented at the time of rental. If the license is not in an English format, an international drivers license must be presented WITH the foreign license. An accredited English translation will be accepted in lieu of an international driving permit.
Age Restrictions
Drivers must be 21 years of age or over for the Wanderer,Warrior and Off- Roader 4WD vehicles and 18 years of age or over for the Breezer and Nomad vehicle. For drivers over the age of 75, a medical certificate stating that the customer is fit to drive for the duration of the hire is required.
Multiple Rentals:
Should a customer have more than one rental, they can be combined to qualify for longer term hire discounts. Campervan hire for both Australia and New Zealand for Backpacker can be combined to qualify if travel is within a 3 month period. For all rentals to qualify each booking needs to be made at the same time. If a customer makes another booking at a later time, the new booking can be combined to qualify if the vehicle collection date/s are within a 3 month period however, the original bookings will not qualify for a discount if applicable.
For campervans that pick up and drop off on the same day, the less expensive rental day will be free of charge. This also applies to the Liability Reduction option taken or the Backpacker Bonus pack if applicable.
If multiple hires are within the same country and total days exceed 50 days only the maximum charge applicable to liability reduction or the Backpacker Bonus Pack will apply. Multiple rentals with 100 days or more in total need to be applied for.
The one-way fee (if applicable) and charges for additional products and services will be charged per vehicle rented.
Road Restrictions:
- 2WD Campervans can only be driven on sealed/bitumen roads. The only exceptions to this are well maintained access roads of less than two kilometres to recognised campgrounds and well-maintained, recognised roads on Kangaroo Island (South Australia).
Should a customer wish to travel on an unsealed road that is greater than two kilometres in length to access a recognised campground special permission can be arranged pending road condition, weather and distance.
- 4WD campervans can also be driven on recognised unsealed roads
- 4WD vehicles may NOT travel to the following areas: Simpson desert, Strzelecki Track, Gunbarrel Highway, Cape York, the Bungle Bungles, Oodnadatta Track, Birdsville Track, Tanami Track, The Plenty Highway, the Burke Development Road from Chillagoe to Normanton and Savannah Way from Normanton to Borroloola, Fraser Island, Finke Road (between Alice Springs and Oodnadatta), Central Arnhem Road, Arnhem Land in general, Gibb River Road, Canning Stock Route, the Lost City in Litchfield Park, Boggy Hole and the Old South Road from Maryvale to Finke.
Backpacker reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions and the distance to nominated destinations in relation to the length of the hire period.
Customer Care On-Road Assistance
Any problems associated with the vehicle, including equipment failure, must be reported to Backpacker as soon as possible and within 24 hours in order to give Backpacker the opportunity to rectify the problem during the rental. Failure to do so will compromise any claims for compensation. We do not accept liability for any claims submitted after this period.

Repairs
Repairs up to AU$200 may be affected without authorization and will be reimbursed. For amounts over AU$200 backpacker will need to be informed in advance. Repairs must be submitted for any repair or the claim will not be paid.
Change of Vehicle
Should the vehicle booked be unavailable through unforeseen circumstances, Backpacker reserve the right to substitute an alternative vehicle without prior notification and at no extra cost. This shall not constitute a breach of contract and does not entitle the hirer to a refund.
Vehicle Category
Vehicles cannot be requested by make or model, only by vehicle category.
Voluntary Downgrade
Should the hirer decide to take a lesser vehicle than booked they will not be entitled to any refund.
Cancellation and Amendments
In the case of cancelling your reservation, the deposit is Non Refundable. In addition there is a $100 cancellation fee. A No Show is considered as a cancellation.
Amendments are charged at a rate of $50 per change. This applies but is not limited to changing the client name, vehicle type, reducing the number of rental days, changing the pickup dates or locations. No refund given on the initial deposit paid.
If an amendment is made to the rental whereby the length of hire is shortened, no refund will be given on the initial deposit amount. In addition, if an amendment is made inside 14 days of pick up, the rental will be charged at the number of days originally booked. A relocation fee may also apply if the collection or return location is amended.
Where the hire is being extended, the amendment fee will not apply.
Please note that amendments may result in the daily rental rate to be recalculated at the rate applicable on the date of the amendment for the entire rental period.
Discretion
Backpacker reserves the right to refuse any rental at its discretion.
Animals
No animals are permitted in our vehicles, excluding guide dogs.
Personal and Company Cheques
Personal and Company cheques will not be accepted as payment for rentals at the time of pick-up. These must be received by Backpacker 14 days prior to commencement of rentals. Personal or Company cheques are not acceptable as the vehicle security deposit.
Calculation Errors
Backpacker will not honour calculation errors. Should a calculation error occur Backpacker will charge for the shortfall.
