When in Canberra dont miss the opportunity to wander through the Australian National
Botanic Gardens, which have 6800 species of Australian native plants growing over a
large site. All the climate zones have been recreated, which provides a cross section of
the different Australian landscapes in a small space. Nestled at the base of Black
Mountain, why not tackle the mountain next, where you will be rewarded with
panoramic city views and a wide range of wild and plantlife.
Below you cannot help but notice Lake Burley Griffin, which is a great place for a
picnic. Surrounded by cycling tracks, its a cheap day out to rent a bicycle and stretch
your legs around its banks. Canoes and kayaks are also available, and fishing is also a
common activity here. After a morning on the lake, why not head to the National Zoo
and Aquarium, which houses the largest collection of big cats in Australia. Every type
of animal from all over the world seems to be here, and the kids will especially love the
chattering monkeys. Have a look at this article
of ours for a few more ideas of things to do in Canberra.
Scattered around the city are close to a hundred wineries that are perfect for daytrips or
a longer tour. The rolling hills are lush and green, and there are a number of National
Parks here too. The beautiful countryside is well worth a visit, and will make an
entertaining tour in one of our campers. Visit the cellar doors of the wineries to sample
the produce and maybe pick up some bottles at a cheap price.
