Australia Touring Ideas: Dubbo and its Surrounds
New South Wales is a state that too often is only remembered for its coastal attractions and for the recognisable international landmarks of Sydney. If you've got the time and the spirit of adventure, then head inland for sights and sounds that will leave you breathless. The town of Dubbo is a good place to use as a base or as a stopover: it caters well to tourists, has a lot to see in the surrounding regions and is home to the infamous Western Plains Zoo.
Dubbo is about a five hour drive from Sydney, but remember when you are on a campervan holiday half the fun is in getting there! So take it slow and enjoy some of the sights along the way, and if you feel the need to stopover then pull into a campsite that caters for campervans and relax. The beauty of a self drive holiday in Australia is the freedom to do as you please, so make the most of it! Some of the places around the Blue Mountains are worth visiting for a day or two, so call in at Katoomba or Blackheath for amazing lookouts, bushwalks and restaurants.

Dubbo is most well known for the Western Plains Zoo. It covers over 300 hectares and is home to over 1500 species of animal from around the world, all housed in huge enclosures that are made to represent their own natural habitat. Enjoy close encounters with lions, tigers and elephants, and go for informative and interesting tours to learn about wildlife from Australia and the rest of the world. There is something here for all age groups, and chances are you wont be able to fit it into one day. There are lots of accommodation options in Dubbo, so park up your campervan and kick back for a couple of days. Have a read of this article for more ideas of things to do in and around Dubbo when you get there.

There is more to see here than just the zoo. The Macquarie River has a reputation as a fiercesome fishing spot, and of course there are all the other water based activities associated with it. The valley which the river flows through is home to numerous farms and wineries, so for a bit of quiet take a drive here, sample come local produce and maybe go on a hike through the peaceful countryside. Surrounding towns like Orange and Bathurst are also worth a look, and will provide you with the true 'outback experience'.
